How do we prepare for a commercial video shoot? Part I

Happy Wednesday everyone! In this article, we would love to share something fun with you. Have you ever wondered how do we prepare for a commercial video shoot? Yes, today we will take you behind the scenes! Are you ready? Let’s go!

Pre-Production

All the works done on a commercial video shoot before the full-scale production begins are called Pre-Production. The more time we invest in preparing for a production, the more quality we harvest in a commercial video. So, we always encourage our client to choose a package with the full pre-production service. Below, it is a list of works included in pre-production. Today we will focus on the first three works.

  • Pre-Production Meeting

  • Script Writing

  • Shot List

  • Location

  • Talents and Crews List

Pre-Production Meeting

Yay, it’s time for a pre-production meeting! As the first step, it is like laying a foundation before building the house. During the pre-production meeting, we will discuss the purpose or goal of the video with our client. The more specific the purpose or goal is, the more effective the commercial video will be when it is released. Here is a list of questions we will discuss that helps us to find the purpose or goal.

  • Who's the target audience?

  • When’s the video due?

  • Where’s the video going to live?

With the confirmed purpose or goal, we will propose and discuss all possible ideas. We might have a few meetings before we confirm on the final idea. It is totally okay! Exploring the perfect idea is like a treasure hunt, which is fun and exciting!

Script Writing

After we have confirmed on the idea, we will start to write the script. We ask our client to participate in writing the script when there is professional information involved. Normally, we write 170-word script for each minute of the commercial video. With the finished script, we will start to work on shot list, location, and talent and crew list. only means that we are molding our artwork more!

Shot List

According to Vimeo.com, a shot list is a full log of all the shots you want to include in your film or video; essentially it is a checklist filled with minute details that will give your film or video a sense of direction and efficiency.

Our director and main cinematographer will work on the shot list together. It usually takes three to five days to finish a shot list with visuals and descriptions. With a shot list, our client and the team will both know how the film/video will turn out. This is the most essential step for a commercial video shoot.

By sharing these three works, we hope you will know more about our work process. Would like to know more about how do we prepare for a commercial video shoot? Stay tuned for the Part 2!
